What is Adjustment disorder?
Adjustment disorders are a name for a group of conditions that can affect you as you fail or have difficulty coping with distressing events in your life.
These events can be losing someone close, losing your job or having relationship issues. everyone has their way of adjusting to stress and when people are not able to cope with their stressors, they are likely to face adjustment disorders. this can result in both psychological and physical symptoms that can be found in both adults and children.
The disorder usually goes away after around six months or when the stressor goes away. it is usually treated with medication, therapy or both.
Causes of adjustment disorder:
An adjustment disorder may be caused by a variety of stressors those affecting adults commonly include:
•Divorce or relationship issues
•Money trouble
•Death of a loved one or someone close
•Major life changes
•Sudden disasters
•Moving to a new place or job
•Illness or health issues.
Stressful events that can affect children include:
•Problems at school
•Domestic abuse or fights in the household
•Anxiety over sexuality.
Types of adjustment disorder:
There are six types of common adjustment disorders:
1) Adjustment disorder with depression which can cause people to lose interest in daily activities.
2) Adjustment disorder with anxiety causes uncontrollable fear of what might happen
3) Adjustment disorder with a mixture of anxiety and depressive disorders
4) Adjustment disorder with a disturbance of conduct causing Reckless Behavior such as, getting into fights or driving fast and carelessly
5) Adjustment disorder with a mixture disturbance of conduct and emotional disorders, causing Reckless Behavior along with anxiety and depression
6) Unspecified adjustment disorder that causes symptoms that are not related to any other types, such as physical symptoms.
Symptoms of adjustment disorder:
It can appear right after you experience a stressful event.
They usually last for as long as six months but could continue if the stressor is still present in your life.
People usually experience Just One symptom but can experience many more the typical symptoms include:
•Anxiousness
•Impulsive or rebellious actions
•Crying
•Feelings of helplessness sadness or being trapped
•Lack of concentration
•Being withdrawn
•Suicidal Thoughts
•Loss of self-esteem.
Physical symptoms are more rare but may show up they include:
•Indigestion
•Insomnia
•Trembling or muscle twitching
•Feeling sore
•Body pain
•Fatigue
Diagnosis for adjustment disorder:
A psychologist or mental health expert might diagnose you with adjustment disorder only if you meet the following conditions:
1) Undiagnosed or unexplained symptoms
2) Experience psychological or physiological symptoms for at least three months after an identifiable stressor
3) Experience more stress than normal due to a stressor
4) Feeling better after around six months.
Treatment for adjustment disorder:
Adjustment disorder is treated through therapy and medication separately and together.
Medication includes:
•Benzodiazepines such as Xanax.
•Non-menzodiazepine anxiolytics such as neurontin
•SSRIs or SNRIs such as Effexor XR or Zoloft.
